Green Mandarin

Species: Synchiropus splendidus

Origin: Western Pacific

Family: Callionymidae

Overview:

The Green Mandarin, also known as the Striped Mandarinfish or Green Mandarinfish, is one of the most visually striking species in the saltwater hobby. Its body displays a vibrant maze of green, blue, and orange hues, giving it a psychedelic appearance that makes it a centerpiece in any reef system. Males can be distinguished by their elongated first dorsal spine.

This species requires a well-established aquarium of at least 30 gallons with a thriving population of live copepods and amphipods, which make up the bulk of its diet. Due to their specialized feeding needs, Green Mandarins are best suited for experienced aquarists or systems with a mature refugium and robust live rock population. They are peaceful and reef-safe, though they may become territorial with other mandarins unless housed as a mated pair.

Though challenging to keep, they have been known to spawn successfully in captivity under ideal conditions. Regular availability of natural microfauna is essential to maintain health and longevity.
