Marine Betta

Species: Calloplesiops altivelis

Origin: Indo-Pacific

Family: Plesiopidae

Overview:

The Marine Betta, also known as the Comet, is a hardy and strikingly patterned predator known for its elegant swimming behavior and unique appearance. Its deep black body is covered in small white spots, with a large eyespot near the tail that mimics the head of a moray eel. This false-eye illusion is part of its natural defense strategy, especially when it hovers head-down near rock crevices.

A peaceful species despite its predatory nature, the Marine Betta is best housed in aquariums of 50 gallons or more, with plenty of caves and low-light areas to accommodate its nocturnal habits. It is reef-safe with corals and anemones but will eat small fish or shrimp that can fit in its mouth. When first introduced, live foods such as saltwater feeder shrimp may be necessary to initiate feeding. Once established, it will accept a variety of meaty frozen foods and prepared carnivore diets.
